Hammond Lane was originally the route taken by condemned persons to be hanged by the gibbet at the river at Stoneybatter.

Prior to 1878, the lane was bordered by houses in both sides, but the original buildings on the northern side were destroyed in a massive foundry explosion in 1878, in which fourteen people died.

The area of these houses and the former foundry behind, now forms part of the intended Family Law Courts complex.
